Are you like me and always on the lookout for inexpensive ways to decorate your home for fall? Today I'm sharing how to create a DIY faux pumpkin patch on a dime with these three easy peasy handmade fall pumpkin ideas.

Decorating for the season with a small budget means finding creative ways to get a bang for your buck. Most everything to make these easy peasy handmade pumpkins can be found at the dollar store.

Three Budget-Friendly Ideas For Handmade Pumpkins

Display this pumpkin assortment of faux pumpkins together on a coffee table tray or group them in each individual style.

If you prefer a more rustic or natural look to your fall decor, then the burlap pumpkins with tree branch stems fit the bill perfectly. For a Farmhouse or French Country style, then the chalk-painted pumpkins are lovely in soft vintage colors or unique colors that match your home.

The metallic pumpkins add a touch of glam to your fall pumpkin patch vignette and have a modern edge. But they are pretty grouped with the chalk-painted pumpkins and depending on the color, the more rustic burlap pumpkins as well.

Whatever style of painted pumpkins you'd like to make, look for inexpensive artificial pumpkins and gourds in different shapes and sizes. I found all of mine at the dollar store. But you could even do this with real pumpkins but in this post, we'll be focusing on the faux.

We'll begin with the quickest and easiest of the three handmade pumpkin ideas because all you need to make them is a can of spray paint.

Metallic DIY Painted Pumpkins

This is such an easy way to add glam to those cheap pumpkins from the dollar store. All you need is a can of metallic spray paint and the color options are silver, gold, copper, bronze, or even rose gold.

Picture a vignette with gold and rose gold paired together with white pumpkins. Or silver and gold paired with white pumpkins. For a rustic look pair the copper and bronze together. So many possibilities!

My small artificial styrofoam pumpkins are painted with silver reflective spray paint so they have an almost mirror-like patina. Two coats should be all you need to paint faux pumpkins with metallic paint.

For the second option for painting inexpensive artificial pumpkins with a lovely matte finish, we'll be using chalk paint.

DIY Chalk Painted Pumpkins And Gourds

The color options for painting pumpkins with chalk paint are endless. You can go with muted traditional fall colors, a soft neutral palette, or customize them in colors that match the decorating style of your home.

You can find chalk-style paint at your local home improvement store, craft store, or online retailers. This paint dries very quickly so you can have an entire pumpkin patch finished in less than an hour! When combined with brown wax, they give the painted pumpkins depth and a gorgeous vintage charm.

DIY Burlap Fabric Pumpkins

To make these rustic burlap fabric pumpkins you'll need a tighter weave burlap, twine, fiberfill batting, and small tree branches foraged from the backyard.

They are made exactly the same way as my Farmhouse Ticking Fabric Pumpkins and my Cotton Terry Knit Sweater Pumpkins and each of those posts contains a detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to make them.

Except with those pumpkins I used vintage kitchen cabinet knobs for the stems. Skip that section of the tutorial and instead, simply glue a small tree branch or preserved pumpkin stem on the top of the burlap pumpkins with a hot glue gun.

If you've never preserved real pumpkin stems for crafting before, I share detailed instructions on how easy they are to preserve in my how-to-make real mini pumpkin tealight holders post.
