A Unique Birdhouse Spring AND Summer Wreath DIY
Do you have a naked front door? Mine has been wreathless since the holidays so this unique birdhouse Spring AND Summer wreath DIY is long overdue.
Wreaths add so much charm and curb appeal to our homes plus they give a warm welcome. The goal for my birdhouse wreath was that it be budget-friendly, made with things I have on hand and that it can be made in a jiffy.
Welcoming Spring AND Summer Wreath DIY
I found everything to make the welcome wreath in my craft bin. Most of the supplies were originally purchased at Goodwill and the dollar store.
The inspiration for the wreath started with this wooden birdhouse hanger from Goodwill.
I thought about leaving the door hanger intact and painting the house's bright whimsical colors. I also entertained the idea that instead of paint, decoupage floral napkins on the front of each birdhouse.
But the DIYer in me decided I could get at least two projects out of that wooden hanger, so the separation began. I got two, using the other two birdhouses on my DIY Nesting Together Sign.
To make the handmade wreath more inviting I strung a mini welcome banner across with small wooden tiles to greet guests.
I shopped my home for some of the supplies like these mini roses that were in a potpourri jar in the bathroom.
I have such an affection for birds, birdhouses, and bird nests and use them often in my seasonal vignettes. They take me back to my childhood where my paternal grandfather built an entire birdhouse village in his backyard.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to make the handmade Spring/Summer Wreath, almost all of the DIY projects shared here at Interior Frugalista have step-by-step tutorials so why not get your budget DIY on and subscribe. You can also follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

Paint The Birdhouse
First up is painting the wooden birdhouse. I painted the front of the birdhouse with Old White chalk paint that I had on hand. Next, I painted the roof and perch with a light sage green chalk paint that I had on hand. Acrylic craft paint or latex paint is just fine too.
How To Stain A Willow Wreath
I found the natural willow wreath form at Dollar Tree but wasn't fond of the light color. Using a foam brush and a water-based gel stain called Tobacco Road, I darkened the wreath. I wasn't too fussy about some of the branches not getting stained.
Adding Faux Rose Leaves
My stash of assorted faux greenery goes back probably thirty years and so I'm always happy to thin the collection for DIY craft projects.
These faux leaves are from the silk roses we used in our daughter's Rustic Wedding Centerpiece Boxes. I simply layered the leaves on just one-half of the wreath and attached them with florist wire.
Attach The Painted Birdhouse
To attach the birdhouse to the wreath I screwed a small eye hook onto the back and thread some florist wire through the loop and onto the back of the wreath. Hot gluing a soda can tab would work too. Use what you have on hand.
Wreath Embellishments
The cute feathered bird came in a package of six from Dollarama and the mini grapevine nest was removed from a dollar store Easter floral pick. That floral pick is the pick that keeps on giving because I used some of the nests for my Farmhouse Spring Nest Decor and used the picks on this 5 Minute DIY Easter Wreath.
Welcome Wreath Banner
The welcome banner is made with wooden tiles leftover from my daughter's DIY Rustic Wedding Card Caddy and simply strung on green twine and tied to the wreath form.
That's all there is to making this easy handmade wreath. So what do you think?

ReplyDeleteI love this wreath, Marie. I'm making it. I have a larger willow wreath and bought a birdhouse for $1.50 at Michael's. I have a stash of rose leaves, too, from previous projects. Love the welcome sign. I have some Scrabble tiles which I might use for that. You are quite the genius!
ReplyDeleteYay, so glad you have everything you need to make your own version of the birdhouse wreath. Have fun making yours, Barb and I'd love to see it when your done!
