DIY Burlap Rag Wreath For Valentine's Day
Today is the first Int'l Bloggers Club challenge of 2019 and the theme is Love Is In The Air. Our hope is to inspire you with unique and interesting ideas for Valentine's day. For my project, I'm using leftover red ribbon from the holidays to make a simple heart-shaped DIY Valentine's Day Burlap Rag Wreath.
DIY Red Burlap Valentine Rag Wreath
I have to admit, I keep my Valentine decor to a minimum but I always hang a seasonal wreath on the mirror in our front entry. After making two red burlap tabletop trees for the holidays I had a few rolls of burlap leftover and put them aside.
I knew the red burlap would be perfect for a Valentine wreath so when our challenge came up I was thrilled to put those rolls to good use.
If you haven't heard of the Int'l Bloggers Club, we are a group of friends from around the world who come together every month to share a themed DIY project. We have members from South Africa, Australia, Spain, the United States, and Canada.
I've included links to everyone's valentine inspired projects at the bottom of the post. For our Christmas challenge in November, I made a Christmas Junk Angel from a repurposed metal shelf.
These are the supplies I used to make the Valentine rag wreath, minus the narrow heart ribbon.
This easy Valentine craft is great to make while binge-watching your favorite Netflix series. I made mine while watching the new season of Grace and Frankie. Have you been watching this series? Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin's antics are hilarious!

How To Make A Burlap Ribbon Valentine Wreath
First, you'll need a wreath form. You can use a metal heart-shaped wreath form or you can make one like I did with craft wire or a recycled metal clothes hanger.
How To Make A Heart-Shaped Metal Wreath Form
I used a heart-shaped grapevine wreath that I had on hand to trace my heart template onto a piece of a whiteboard. But you could make a paper template or freehand a heart shape.
Starting on the bottom point of the wreath, bend the craft wire over the heart template, holding it in place with tape as you work (pictured below). Twist the ends of the wire together with needle nose pliers and cut the excess with wire cutters.
This step is optional but to conceal the metal wreath form from peeking through the ribbon, spray paint it red. I painted it Rustoleum Colonial Red.
Cutting Rag Wreath Ribbon
This is the most tedious part of the rag wreath-making process. This is the part where you'll want to take your ribbon and scissors in front of the television.
My burlap ribbon is wired because that is what I had on hand but my preference would have been unwired burlap ribbon. Cut both the burlap ribbon and red & white accent ribbon into 9-inch strips. I used one 3-yard spool of 7/8-inch unwired accent ribbon and 1 1/2 spools of 10 yard 1-inch burlap ribbon.
How To Attach Ribbon Onto Wreath Form
Embrace the fray! Simply tie generous strips of burlap ribbon around the entire wreath until the wire is hidden and fray the ends as you work.
After every eighth strand of burlap ribbon, tie the accent ribbon onto the wreath form. This is optional but make a V cut on the end of each accent ribbon. To do this simply fold the tail of the ribbon in half and cut it diagonally towards the bottom of the ribbon.
Optional Pearl Drop Charm
While the red rag wreath looked fine just the way it is, I decided to further embellish it with pearls.
Adding a pearl drop charm to the bottom of the wreath is completely optional. To make mine I recycled pearl costume jewelry that I never wear and some metal heart charms leftover from the Recycled Red Scarf Valentine Wreath
The drop charm is super easy to make.
- Tie clear jewelry thread onto a metal heart charm.
- Thread three small pearl beads (salvaged from costume jewelry onto the thread.
- Add one large pearl bead followed by three more small pearl beads.
- Tie the thread onto a small jewelry jump ring.
- Open the jump ring with needle-nose pliers.
- Slip the jump ring onto the bottom of the metal wreath form and close it tight.
Adding a small rosette with the red and white accent ribbon is also completely optional. They are easy to make and I share a step-by-step tutorial here in my How To Make A Drop Cloth Rosette Pillow
Adding Pearl Accents
I had some pearls leftover and at that last minute decided to embellish the wreath with them. Spaced evenly around the wreath, they were attached with a hot glue gun. Alternatively, running a faux pearl necklace around the center of the wreath would have been very pretty too.
That's it, we're done and now you have a pretty Valentine's wreath plus you got caught up on your favorite shows. Win-win!
