Easy DIY Fleece Valentine Heart Pillow
If you can sew a straight line, then you could easily make this cute fleece Valentine heart pillow and you'll have it finished in 15 minutes. You don't need a sewing machine to make it but it's a lot quicker if you do.
The pillow can cost absolutely nothing to make or very little by recycling old clothing, fabric remnants, and dollar store supplies. If you've got young kids, you may just find the fabric you need in their pajama drawer!
Easy Sew Heart Pillow For Valentine's Day
It all started when I found this fleece remnant in my fabric bin. I think it's leftover from a project my daughter made in high school. She's now married with two children so that tells you how long it's been sitting in the bin. There was enough to make the pillow and an upcycled tray for Valentine's Day.
If you can't find heart fleece you could use a solid red fleece with white pompom trim OR white fleece with red pompom trim. The possibilities are endless for making this heart pillow and you're not limited to fleece fabric.
What You'll Need To Make It
You'll need very few supplies to make the pillow, most of which you may already have. But if not, take a look in the remnant bin at your local fabric store or the clothing aisle at your local thrift store.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to make this Valentine's day pillow, almost all of the DIY projects shared here at Interior Frugalista have step-by-step tutorials so why not get your budget DIY on and subscribe. You can also follow us on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Make A Heart Shape Pattern
First, you'll need to make a heart pattern for the pillow. To do this draw one half of a heart shape on a sheet of bond printer paper. As pictured below, use the entire width of the paper (8 1/2-inches) and length (11-inches). Note this doesn't include a seam allowance.
Heart Pattern Placement
You'll need two pieces of fabric for the front and back of the pillow. With the wrong side of the fabric facing towards you, fold the fabric in half. Set the half heart pattern along the fold line (as pictured below). Pin the pattern onto the fabric with the center of the heart on each fold.
Cut Heart Pillow Fabric
Before cutting the fabric we need to add a seam allowance. I went with a large 1-inch seam allowance which will be trimmed later. In hindsight, a 1/2-inch seam allowance won't require trimming.
Measuring with a ruler, either draw the seam allowance directly onto the fabric or cut it as you go like I did.
Sew Heart Pillow
Remove the pattern from both pieces and unfold each heart. With the good sides together, pin the wrong side of the front and back pieces together. Make sure to mark with pins a 4-6 inch opening for adding polyester fill later.
Before we start sewing I thought I'd share a helpful tip. If you are of a certain age like me and struggle to thread a needle, then you're going to love this.
Pro-Tip
Hold a piece of white paper behind the eye of the sewing needle and it will magically appear before your very eyes. I always keep this little piece of paper on hand in the storage compartment of my sewing machine.
Set your sewing machine to the straight stitch and sew along the seam allowance, making sure to leave that opening for the batting.
But if you don't have a sewing machine, stitch the pillow by hand with a short running stitch. It won't take very long for a pillow this size and it's a great task to do while watching your favorite television show.
Trim the seam allowance around the pillow to 1/2-inch. Remove the bulk around the curve by snipping perpendicular to the seam, making sure not to cut into the seam (as pictured below).
Fill Heart Pillow With Batting
Turn the heart pillow right side out pushing the bottom point out with your finger. Stuff the pillow with polyester fill and fold the seam allowance in the opening together and pin.
Hand stitch the opening closed with an invisible stitch called a ladder stitch. If you're unfamiliar with this stitch I found a great ladder-stitch video tutorial on YouTube that you may find helpful.
Add Pompom Trim
Run a bead of hot glue or fabric glue along the seam of the pillow and attach the pompom ribbon.
That's it, fifteen minutes later we have a cute heart pillow for Valentine's Day.
