DIY Solar Powered Pineapple Jar Upcycled Light Sconces
Hi friends, today I'm sharing such an easy peasy idea for budget-friendly solar-powered lighting for a deck, patio, or apartment balcony. Everything you need to make these adorable DIY solar pineapple jar upcycled light sconces can be found at the thrift store and dollar store.
I came up with the idea when the glass cylinder on my metal candle sconces broke. I don't throw anything away without seeing if it can be repurposed into something useful first. During a recent trip to the dollar store, I found just the inspiration I needed to turn my old candle sconces into set-and-forget solar lights for our deck.
Repurposed Metal Candle Sconces to Solar Patio Lights
I always had problems with the LED wax candles melting in the sun so really, that broken glass did me a favor. I love how the solar lanterns add cozy lighting to the seating area of our deck. I have them hanging on the repurposed louvered door privacy screens flanking our DIY water wall on the deck.
The cute nesting together sign hanging above the water wall is another DIY project inspired by thrift store finds.
Here's what the metal candle sconces looked like before with the missing glass cover.
If you don't have a set of old metal candle sconces to convert into solar lights, visit your local thrift store or garage sales for upcycling potential. With a quick refresh with paint, they'll look new again.

This is the solar light inspiration I found at my local Dollarama (Canadian dollar store chain) but Dollar Tree may have them too. If you're unsuccessful in finding them at your local dollar store, here are some pineapple jar light options that I found on Amazon.
Here's How I Did It
What says summer more than bright yellow pineapple jars! In order to make them work with my sconces the metal ring that held the glass cylinders in place needed to be whacked off. Nothing that a metal cutting disc and Dremel tool can't handle.
Next, I refreshed the metal sconces with a couple of fresh coats of black spray paint and they look new again.
Once the paint dried overnight I simply glued the base of the glass pineapple mason jars onto the refreshed candle holders with E6000 glue and voila, outdoor solar lighting!
How simple and easy is that! I love how the yellow glass pairs with the black metal.
This isn't my first solar light conversion. A few years ago I turned this set of metal wall sconces into solar lights except with these, I used solar garden lights from the dollar store. So now you have two options for making DIY solar patio lights.

Those pineapple sconces that are solar are fabulous for outdoors. I remember when you made the waterfall and the sign above it. Still looking so great. Enjoy that backyard retreat. We all need a little retreat of late.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I've been replacing all my wax candles with solar lights in the yard for that reason. I did the happy dance in the Dollarama aisle when I saw those pineapple solar jars. LOL Yes, I'm heading out into the backyard soon to enjoy lunch while we have sunshine. Enjoy the sunshine today too my friend. xo
