Two Upcycled Wine Bottle Carriers For Summer

While slowly working my way through my thrift store stash I came across two wine holders. One is a vintage wood rattan wine holder and the other a metal wine holder. Both hold two bottles of wine and both had seen their better days.

But I knew with a little TLC, they could be redeemed as unique one-of-a-kind hostess gifts. So with just a little paint, they were transformed into two upcycled wine bottle carriers for summer.  Both hold two bottles of wine, one side for red and the other for white.

Two Wine Bottle Holder Makeovers In Two Styles

The wood rattan wine carrier got a coastal-style makeover that's perfect to take on a beachside picnic. The metal wine carrier got a more elegant makeover suitable for a summer garden party. The hardest part of these two makeovers was waiting for the paint to dry.

Vintage Wood Rattan Wine Bottle Carrier Makeover

We'll begin with the vintage wood rattan wine carrier. You can see in the photo below that it has seen its better days.

...and here's the inside before the makeover. It leaves little to be desired so time to give this baby some personality!

What a difference a little white and teal paint made!

The makeover on this wine bottle holder took a little more time than the metal one. Besides painting it, I replaced the handle, added a fleur-de-lis embellishment, and made a cute wooden tag to hang from the handle.

But nonetheless, the makeover was quite easy and the only time-consuming part was waiting for paint and glue to dry.

Here's How I Did It

  • The interior, leather trim on the exterior, and the metal clasp are spray-painted with Rustoleum Chalked Paint in a pretty teal Tidal Pond color.
  • The rattan exterior is painted with Behr Chalk Decorative Paint in the color Tin White.
  • The paint on both the inside and outside is sealed with Rustoleum Clear Matte Spray Paint.
  • I had the silver fleur-de-lis metal medallion in my craft stash and attached it to the front of the case with E6000 glue.

How To Make A Cute Wooden Wine Carrier Tag

The cute wooden beach tag was so easy to make with thin scrap wood. You will need either a stencil, Cricut Maker machine, or I've included a link to a tried and true image transfer technique below.

  • With a pencil and carpenter's square, draw a 3-inch square on a piece of thin scrap wood.
  • Set the square along the pencil lines and clamped onto your work table with small quick-grip clamps.
  • Score and cut the square with a sharp retractable knife.
  • Sand the edges smooth with a sheet of 180-grit sandpaper.
  • Spray paint the wooden tag both on the front and back with the same teal Tidal Pond chalked paint.
  • While the paint is drying, go into Cricut Design Space, open a new project, press the Images tab on the left, and search "beach".
  • There you will find the cute "take me to the beach" graphic for subscribers and resize it to 2.8-inches square and cut the graphic with white glossy permanent vinyl.
  • If you don't have a vinyl cutting machine you could print the typography in your favorite font and use this image transfer technique to add it to the tag. Then go over the transfer with a white Sharpie paint pen.
  • With an Awl and a hammer, punch two holes on the top of the tag and threaded white twine through the holes for the hanger.

Much better, right? I was thrilled to find the conch shell knob, in a teal color no less, in my hardware stash. It couldn't be more perfect for the coastal-style wine carrier makeover.

Metal Wine Bottle Carrier Makeover

Next up is the metal wine carrier makeover. What a difference a little paint made to completely transform this one. The vines on the mesh looked dated before but now they add a lovely charm to the holder.

This is what the sad metal wine bottle carrier looked like before. White paint makes everything look instantly better, wouldn't you agree?

I also lined both the bottom and the top of the lid with pretty scented lavender paper. I wish I had smell-o-vision so you could enjoy the lovely scent too.

While it looks pretty for its intended purpose, it could also be used as home decor and I share a few ideas below.

Alternative Uses For The Metal Wine Bottle Carrier

  1. Lantern - Set two outdoor waterproof flameless candles on a timer inside to use as an outdoor lantern or regular flameless candles to use indoors.
  2. Flower Vase - Displayed with the lid open, set glass cylinders inside and fill them with fresh cut flowers from the garden.
  3. Seasonal Decor - It could be used year-round for seasonal decorating. Filled with seashells during the summer, painted eggs for Easter, assorted grapevine or moss balls for Spring, acorns and mini pumpkins for Fall, and shiny Christmas ornaments for the holidays. Tie a seasonal bow on the handle and it would look so pretty displayed on a bookcase, mantel, or coffee table tray.

Here's How I Did It

The metal wine holder makeover was so quick and easy. The most time-consuming part was waiting for the paint to dry.

  • After a good clean, paint it with two coats of Rustoleum gloss white spray paint. I tried the primer white color first but didn't like the flat sheen.
  • This step is completely optional. To dress up the inside of the wine carrier I lined the bottom and top of the lid with lavender scented drawer liner paper.
  • The paper is held in place with double-sided tape that is easy to remove.

I hope this has inspired you to look twice at wine bottle carriers when you see them at your local thrift store or garage sales. Like I mentioned earlier, they make lovely budget-friendly hostess gifts.

  5. Both of these wine holders are great. I love how sturdy the first one is, it makes me wonder how old it is, it looks like maybe the 40s?? Of course of my favorite is the white lacy one. My taste never changes. Both are great gift ideas.

    1. I thought the first one was vintage as well, maybe from the 30s or 40s era but when I flipped it over it had a Homesense price tag. LOL The white wine tote seems to be favored more than the beach one on Pinterest too.

  14. Marie, These upcycles are wonderful. I can see me taking the aqua and white one to a picnic late in the evening - at the beach or in our backyard. A bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers, a little fruit. What a great idea! I would probably use the metal one for candles or flowers as you suggest. Keep sharing your ideas with us amateurs!
