Repurposed Antique Chair Seat Dog Leash Holder

How to turn an antique chair seat into a one-of-a-kind dog leash holder with a clock. Yup, you read that right, a time for a walk, clock made with an old cane chair seat.

FINALLY, I found a purpose for that dusty old seat thanks to our Int'l Bloggers Club challenge this month. In honor of World Dog Day on August 26th, our theme this month is a FURever.

One Of A Kind Dog Leash Holder With Clock

A few years ago my son brought me an old dilapidated antique chair knowing I'd find a use for it. Well, that old chair has been the chair that keeps on giving!

Piece by piece I've been slowly repurposing all the parts like the unique bird feeder I made with the chair back. You can see the other repurposed chair part ideas on my repurposed antique chair page.

If you haven't heard of our Int'l Bloggers Club, we are a group of blogging friends from around the globe who come together on the third Monday of every month to share a themed DIY project. Links to my uber-talented friend's FURever ideas are included further down in the post.

We have members from Spain, South Africa, Australia, the USA, and Canada. The theme for our last challenge was I Can Upcycle for World Upcycling Day where I made bright and whimsical Upcycled Tin Can Wind Chimes for my grandkids to enjoy in our backyard.

This is the antique chair seat with the missing cane.

Also in my stash, I had an IKEA SKURAR lattice metal tray found at Goodwill for $2.50. The two were meant for each other because they are a perfect fit.

That's as far as I got with my inspiration and they both sat in the corner of the workshop collecting dust for months, if not more.

It wasn't until I saw that the theme for our challenge is World Dog Day that the clock idea entered my mind.

My thoughts went to "time for a walk" and the next thing I know I'm searching online for some dog pawprint hooks.

When the package arrived I thought, what the heck am I going to do with a happy face change purse! A few choice words followed when I figured they screwed up my order.

When Mr. Frugalista came home from work he opened said change purse and low and behold there were my knobs! We both had a good laugh. Interesting and unexpected packaging I must say.

Here's How I Made It

The handmade dog leash holder fell into place easily. I'll show you how I did it, starting with the antique chair seat.

Antique Chair Seat

  1. On the back of the seat, I attached two narrow vertical blocks of wood to raise the depth to accommodate the recessed clock mechanism.
  2. Next, I set the original chair legs back in place to plug the holes.
  3. I plugged the remaining holes where the chair back spindles once were with wood dowels in various sizes.
  4. Once the glue was cured, the dowels were cut flush with a hacksaw and wood blade.
  5. Any gaps and deep scratches were filled with wood filler.
  6. Once the filler was dry, the chair seat was sanded smooth with a mouse sander and 150-grit sandpaper.
  7. Next, I grabbed a can of black Behr Chalk Decorative Paint and painted two coats on both the bottom and top of the seat.
  8. Last but not least I protected the paint with Dixie Belle Paint clear coat that I had on hand.

Repurposed IKEA Skurar Lattice Tray Clock

The tray was in pretty good shape but had a few scratches. So it got a fresh coat of semi-gloss white spray paint.

To add a clock face to the metal tray I went to Cricut Design Space and searched the images tab for a clock face graphic to import and then resized it to fit.

This is my first attempt at cutting a vinyl clockface. I found it a little challenging to center the large graphic onto the metal plate without the transfer paper sticking to the tray. It isn't perfectly centered but I'm okay with that because it's hardly noticeable.

Next, I marked the center of the clock face (not the tray) and drilled a hole for the clock mechanism. Then the tray is attached to the seat with E6000 glue.

DIY Dog Bone Sign

  1. In PicMonkey I found a dog bone graphic and sized it to fit legal size paper.
  2. Before printing, I changed the printer settings to scale the graphic by 80%. The dimensions of my dog bone are 2 1/2-inches tall in the middle x 9 1/2-inches long.
  3. Next, I traced the dog bone template onto a piece of hardboard that I had on hand and cut it with a jigsaw and thin wood blade.
  4. Ideally, a band saw or scroll saw would have cut the dog bone shape like butter.
  5. Alternatively, if you don't have access to any of these saws, you can use a retractable craft knife to carefully scribe the hardboard until it cuts through. It takes time and patience but can be done.
  6. Sand the edges smooth with 150 grit sandpaper.
  7. Now the dog bone can be painted with white acrylic craft paint.

  1. Back in Cricut Design Space, I created the time for a walk, typography (see screenshot below).
  2. I chose the Felix font not only because of the name but wouldn't you agree that the letter R and K look like legs taking a step?
  3. I cut the words with black glossy permanent vinyl and added them to the painted dog bone with transfer tape.

Then the DIY dog bone sign was attached to the top of the chair seat with E6000 glue.

Paw Print Knob Dog Leash Hooks

  1. I just eyeballed the placement of the dog print knobs by spacing them equally across the bottom of the chair seat.
  2. With a drill bit the same diameter as the screws that came with the knobs, four holes were drilled all the way through the seat (as pictured in the next step below).
  3. I slipped the screws through the holes from the back of the seat and attached the cute paw print knobs to the front.

Clock Mechanism Installation

The clock mechanism was attached to the back of the tray following the instructions that came with it.

Last but not least, the heavy-duty D-ring picture hanger hooks were attached and it was ready to hang on the wall.

Pro-Tip For Hanging Wall Art

Hanging wall art with two hooks can be such a pain getting the holes lined up just so. I have the easiest technique for getting it right every.single.time. Here's my no-measure picture hanging tip that I know you're going to appreciate.

I'm thrilled with how the repurposed cane chair seat dog leash holder turned out. Now, all we need is a dog!

  1. Isn't it just the best when something you've been hoarding for yonks finally gets used? And when two somethings come together to make a creative project then it's a double win. Love how your take on the Furever challenge, Marie and just in case you need a little nudge to get a puppy, your grandbabies need a cuddly ball of fluff to play and grow with ;-)

    1. It sure is Michelle! I do the happy dance when I can combine more than one item in my stash to create a project. Less stuff collecting dust in the workshop. As for getting a puppy; been there - done that - wore the t-shirt - grandma likes her freedom. LOL The grandbabies have a dog and three cats to cuddle at home.
